The Invitation of Jesus

In Matthew 11:28 Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

The burdens and cares of life on this earth can weary you and I and get us down. Sadly, that’s an inevitable fact of life because of the curse of sin. This came on all of us who have descended from Adam and Eve because they sinned in the Garden of Eden when they gave in to the lies of the serpent. The result is that all of us are born with a sin nature (Psalm 51:5; Romans 3:23; 5:12-14). Everyone, that is, except Jesus, God the Son, who came to earth as a man to go to the cross and pay the price of death Holy God demanded for our sin. He could do this because He was conceived in Mary’s womb, not of man’s sin-bearing seed, but by the holy, sinless Spirit of God coming upon her (Luke 2:34-35; Matthew 1:20).

Therefore there is One who can give us relief and a remedy from our burdens and cares, and Jesus is more than willing to do so. Jesus went through all the kinds of suffering we ever will when He took the burden of our sin on Himself in His death on the cross. We no longer need to strive to get rid of that burden – something we can’t do on our own anyway.

He invites us to come to Him, take His yoke on us, and learn of Him. That involves entering into a personal relationship with Him by faith. That happens when we go to Him, admit our helplessness to get rid of our sin burden and all of our other burdens, and believe in Him as our Burden-Bearer and Strength-Giver.

Loaded down right now and don’t know where to turn? Take up Jesus on His invitation and embrace His remedy and relief.
